started from the bottom, now we’re here.
Literally… a few burners, a couple pots, and a well-lit basement became a full-fledged company.
Our story
“Sometimes things just fall into place in delightful and unexpected ways…”
- Dami Hunter, founder & owner of Magpie Fibers
Magpie Fibers is a hand-dyed yarn business that strives to deliver consistent, quality, hand-dyed yarn to the fiber arts industry.
Dami Hunter — our founder & owner — was initially a jewelry maker, inspired by the beautiful shiny objects that could elevate a whole outfit. But once she was introduced to knitting, she found a brand new “shiny object” that slowly started taking up more and more of her time… Once Dami decided to try her hand at dyeing, that was it. A new love called Magpie Fibers was born and launched December of 2014 at The Knot House in Frederick, Maryland.
She dedicated herself to building a company that was based on her ideal hand-dyed yarn experience: receiving a quality yarn product that was dyed with expert level artisanal skills.
hand-dyed with care
At Magpie Fibers, our team is now dedicated to Dami’s vision: giving every single customer the luxury experience they deserve. Whether you’re purchasing yarn from us in-store or online, every skein has been processed by at least four of our Magpies before it reaches your home. Each skein is carefully dyed-by-hand at our warehouse facility, with no more than 12 skeins being attributed to each dye lot.
Part of the allure of hand-dyed yarn is its uniqueness… but we also know that you need a hand-dyed yarn company that you can trust. We work hard every day to earn that trust, committing to each and every skein undergoing a strict quality control process. Basically, if it doesn’t look like the picture our customer saw, it doesn’t ship… period.
“To be building my business in this amazing community, connecting with so many wonderful, creative people, and meeting fantastic makers across the country and around the world… it’s the greatest blessing. I hope you love making with Magpie Fibers yarns as much as we love creating them.”
