MINI GNOME WORKSHOP

Knit an adorable mini gnome, perfect for holiday decor or gifting while mastering fun knitting techniques. Together with Aleks Byrd, you’ll learn all the techniques used commonly across her family of festive knitted gnome patterns. We will cover everything from a crochet provisional cast-on, bobble stitch nose, some beautiful Estonian knitted braid embellishement and of course a sewn fringe beard! At the end of the workshop, you’ll have a gnome ready for the festive season with no doubt the desire to knit a whole gnome family!

Intermediate knitter; students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round, cast-on, bind-off. 4 hours in person taught in two 2 hour sessions with 1 hour break between sessions. Materials are included, but you’re welcome to bring your own as well, materials are listed on the confirmation page.

In this workshop, Bristol and Thea will share their personal design processes and where they find inspiration. During this workshop, you will take a walk around Downtown Frederick to find patterns in the everyday and capture what inspires you. Once back at homebase, Thea and Bristol will teach you how to translate your findings into knitting designs, focusing on hats but open to other ideas. It will be a day of literal and figurative exploration to inspire your next knitting masterpiece!

There will be two sections of this class:

Get a taste of Estonian knitting by making a wristlet showcasing four traditional techniques. This workshop is an introduction to Estonian knitting exploring knit fringe, knit braids, bobbles, and roosimine inlay knitting. We will travel across Estonia learning these different techniques that are much easier than they look. A great way to get to grips with many of the techniques covered in Aleks Byrd’s book Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits.

Students will learn:

Estonian Pärnumaa knit fringe

Knit braids: Kihnu vits & Twisted braid

Nupp bobble

Vikkel lateral braid

Roosimine inlay knitting

SKILL LEVEL: intermediate knitter ; students should be comfortable to knit and purl in the round with two colours at a time (easy colourwork), reading from charts, cast-on, bind -off

Together we will explore two different styles of steek edges from the fun of a knotted fringe steek great for a shawl and the all round great reinforcement method with crochet. We will finish off with the perfect and super neat steek sandwich band that makes a great finishing touch hiding your steek on a cardigan.

This workshop is all about the humble and fabulous classic stockinette sock. We will learn about getting the perfect fit by exploring different cast ons, cuffs, heels and toes. We will also demystify some techniques that may seem intimidating at first, but are quite simple and definitely fun once you dive in. Cut our knitting, fold a hem, add embroidery (and more)? Yes! We will do all of this together and take your favourite vanilla socks to the next level using lots of simple, creative ideas. You will leave with so many tips, tricks and techniques to add into all of your sock knitting projects.
